You Can Take a Girl Out of School

September always makes me nostalgic for the beginning of another school year, but this year especially, I just can’t shake the feeling. I want to walk to class on a chilly morning, coffee in hand, a fresh batch of school supplies in tow. And now that pre-exam jitters are no longer in the picture I can truly appreciate back to school time for the inspirational, fresh start season that it is. After all, if  you learn something new every day you can stay a student for life! In that spirit I will be picking out a new non-fiction book to read, indulging in a more glamorous version of those school day standbys (wouldn’t you have loved looking up SAT words in that golden leather dictionary?), and channeling Kathleen Kelley from You’ve Got Mail with “bouquets of sharpened pencils” and “the smell of Scotch tape”.

Make It Work

I’ve found that unless I truly  love, love, LOVE  my workspace I end up on the sofa with the Mac on my lap making more progress on developing a serious crick in my neck than my work. Right now is one of those times when I am not loving my space, or the (hopefully temporary) crick in my neck, but all that is about to change thanks to this much loved photo of Aerin Lauder in her office. I stumbled upon this little gem a few days ago and now we are full steam ahead on a new, clean yet glamorous, white and gold desk! It’s possible that I am enjoying the process of decorating the office even more than I will enjoy working in it (I mean who doesn’t love having a legitimate excuse to redecorate, am I right?), but I am pretty sure my days on the sofa are just about numbered.

4. Caprise Table Lamp – gorgeous lucite fades into the background while still adding a stylish touch, take a peek at your local Target, I was able to find a more affordable version of this lamp and love it just as much
5. Iomoi Pencils – a glass full of stylish pencils, as seen on Aerin’s desk,  is a must!
6. Creme Tea Roses – flowers make any task better, and these lovely blooms will last forever
7. Lip Tease Tea Cup – many hours of work means many (many) cups of tea

Magic Cottage

Roald Dahl‘s adorable writing cottage (which no one  else was permitted to enter) serves as a bit of validation for all of us who abandon our proper desks and end up on sofas with computers on our laps. If Mr. Dahl could create so much from his armchair, surely there is hope for the rest of us! I just love how cozy his little cottage looks (and how sweet is that yellow door?), it has a bit of a magical air about it, perhaps because I know how many beautiful stories were born there. Do you spend most of your time at a desk or is your workspace, like mine, a bit more nomadic?

P.S. Take a peek at this article for more artists who refused to sit at their desks, or often to sit still at all. If only I could figure out how to tap away on my laptop while pacing the room I’d be set!
