Eat, Pray, Love, Gems

I never got around to reading Eat, Pray, Love and I haven’t had a chance to see the movie yet (if you’ve seen it, did you enjoy?), but I am really excited about these gorgeous Bali door hangers. The makers of one of my favorite jewelry lines, Energy Muse (I’ve written about them previously here), followed Elizabeth Gilbert’s footsteps to Bali and brought back a bit of beauty, energy, and inspiration for all of us to enjoy. I think that happy little elephant (whose upturned trunk is supposed to bring luck) is my favorite, I’d like to hang him in our bathroom to cheer me up in the mornings and who knows maybe he will actually deliver some of that luck. Their Bali adventure also inspired Freedom Beads and the Destiny necklace, both lovely.

Classic Martini

Happy Friday, hope you all have wonderful plans for the weekend! Today, in order to hopefully mitigate the creepiness of it being Friday the 13th (shudder), we will be talking about my very favorite cocktail the classic Martini.  Although the vodka Martini is popular today, the classic is made with gin and as you might guess I prefer that recipe. Always an appropriate and chic option, I consider the Martini to be the delicious king of cocktails. Enjoy!

P.S. I am currently working on a complete Martini guide, so soon you will be able to impress your friends and bartenders with your freakishly thorough knowledge of all things Martini.

Classic Martini

1   1/2 oz. Gin

3/4 oz. Dry Vermouth

Stir with ice and strain into cocktail glass. Garnish with lemon twist or olive. You may also shake the Gin and Vermouth with ice, but this will result in a slightly more watered down cocktail as the shaking causes more ice to melt than stirring.

That Old Familiar Feeling

I have that old, familiar, back to school feeling.  And once I get that feeling I can’t wait for fall to arrive. It is absolutely over between me and summer.  I’m over the clothes, the heat, the humidity, the constant humming of the AC units, it has all become instantly intolerable. I’m ready for the chill in the air, the scent of rain and burning fireplaces permeating the neighborhood, sweaters, pumpkins, cider. Most of all I can’t wait for that fantastic feeling of inspiration. Although fall no longer brings with it a new school year, the feeling that a fresh cycle has begun, that newer, better, bigger things are about to be accomplished has never gone away. And I can’t wait.

Dirty Vodka

I’m so excited that Flipping Out and of course my favorite fellow OCD-er Jeff Lewis are back on Bravo!  Last night’s episode was fantastic ( the look on Trace’s face when they were talking about Zoila’s bikini wax was hysterical! ) but I have to call Jeff out on his “martinis”. Jeff, nothing but love for you, but a jigger of vodka, a half jigger olive juice, and a half jigger water (?) does not a martini make.  What you are drinking is a deliciously dirty vodka, and a weak one at that. Sorry to be a curmudgeon but calling any old thing in a martini glass a martini is my equivalent of you receiving onions in your lunch, you know what I mean?  I think we’ll need to talk about martinis this Friday.

Evening

Last night we watched Evening. It has been buried in our Netflix queue for a long time and we finally let it have the number one spot.  I’m not actually sure if I liked it or not, which is odd for me when it comes to movies (husband slept through the entire thing so you can guess what his feelings were).  But I think maybe there is a lesson in this film, it is definitely worth watching while one is still young.  If nothing else it is visually very interesting for fans of the 1950′s.  I will probably be carrying around that close up shot of Claire’s nail polish trying to get a good color match for fall. Have you seen Evening, what did you think?
