Happy Birthday Scorpio

Since there are a few Scorpios in my family I took special notice of this cocktail recipe.  I haven’t tried it yet but it will definitely be my first blend when I get around to acquiring some sloe gin.

This is also the point where I admit that not only have I never tried sloe gin I thought it was “slow” gin.  As in a “slow” gin fizz. And then I would wonder what exactly made the gin fizz slow. Were you to make it slowly? Drink it slowly? Did it fizz slowly? Please tell me I am not alone in this.

As it were sloe gin is steeped in a type of plum called the sloe fruit.  I am told it tastes sweet and tart and I would imagine also plumy.

Enjoy and Happy Birthday Scorpios!

The Scorpio (makes 2 )

Recipe from Martha Stewart Living Magazine, November 2009

3 ounces sloe gin, preferably Plymouth*

3 ounces ginger ale, I like Canada Dry*

2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice

1/4 teaspoon grated peeled fresh ginger

Ice cubes

2 lemon-peel twists, for serving

Mix sloe gin, ginger ale, lemon juice, ginger, and ice in a cocktail shaker. Strain into 2 ice-filled glasses. Serve each with a lemon-peel twist.

*Neither the makers of Plymouth gin or Canada Dry ginger ale have given me any money or products in order to say that. The Plymouth brand is preferred by the writers of the recipe, the Canada Dry by me.  I have not tried Plymouth. I have tried and love the Canada Dry which I purchased with my own money. I am completely certain the recipe will work just as well with your preferred brand of sloe gin and ginger ale.
